Presentation: "What Does a Person Have To Do To Use a Computer Here?"

On November 11, 2011 at UNC Asheville, 10 am in RL 101 (The Whitman Room)

Ramsey Library invites you to the following presentation:

"What Does a Person Have To Do To Use a Computer Here?"
Presented by Jill Ellern and Robin Hitch from Western Carolina University

This is a repeat presentation originally given at the North Carolina Library Association 59th Biennial Conference in Hickory on October 7, 2011.

Find out how North Carolina academic libraries (including all community colleges, private colleges and the UNC system) control patron use of computers in their public areas. This presentation looks at the results of a statewide survey into the authentication practices to see how libraries deal with privacy, authentication, guest access and data retention.

The co-researchers are from Western Carolina University - Jill Ellern, Systems Librarian, Shandon Bates, former Director of Systems and Operations but now at University of Oregon, and Robin Hitch, Computer Support Analyst in the Hunter Library.

Open to all. No registration required.

Changes to our web site

Dear library community,

We've done a little housekeeping on our primary web pages.

Here's what we've changed:

1) Added a link and widget to our new service, LibAnswers. Try it out!

2) Added a daily library hours box.

3) Changed our header and colors to more closely align with the University colors.

We hope you find these small changes helpful. You'll find everything else just where it was. Email library@unca.edu to let us know what you think!

Group Study Rooms Upgraded

In response to student requests and mindful of an increasing need for "smart" group study space, the library has equipped five of its group study rooms with 36" plasma monitors to be used with laptop computers.

Students may bring their own laptops or check one out from the library.

In the 2009-2010 school year, students checked out keys to group study rooms 4,212 times. We hope this new addition will make them even more useful to students as they collaborate on papers and projects.

Ramsey Library wants to express its gratitude to the lab/smart classroom team of ITS' User Services. Many thanks to Mark Nielson, Alex Mitchell, and John Furst for their supportive collaboration and their quick, professional work in getting these screens up and running.

BROWN BAG: Creating a Collaborative Learning Commons in Ramsey Library

Research has changed. Assignments have changed. Libraries are changing, too.

Find out what changes Ramsey Library has planned.

You are invited to attend a brown-bag talk on

Creating a Collaborative Learning Commons in Ramsey Library

Tues., Nov. 4, 12:30-1:30
or
Wed., Nov. 5, 2:00-3:00
or
Thurs., Nov. 6, 12:30-1:30

Where: Kimmel Lab, Ramsey Library 119

(Directly behind the Research & Technology Desk)

Hosted by Bryan Sinclair, Associate University Librarian for Public Services

The Collaborative Learning Commons, a new type of learning space currently being developed at UNC Asheville's Ramsey Library, brings together a variety of elements to foster student exploration and inquiry in new and creative ways. It is not a static computer lab. Rather, it incorporates the freedom of wireless communication, flexible workspace clusters that promote interaction and collaboration, and comfortable furnishings, art, and design to make users feel relaxed, encourage creativity, and support peer-learning. To this, add some specialized software, audio-video capabilities, self-help graphics services, color imaging, and production/presentation software catered to student learning and needs and it becomes a one-stop collaboratory for out-of-class assignments, writing, research, and group projects.

Martha Stewart or Readymade?

We hope our library, your library, is many things: a place you can visit in person or online to find the information you need, a place to meet and collaborate, and a place to read and think for pleasure and edification.
We'd like your input on that last point. We've put together a list of magazines we think you might like for leisure reading. If you were to build the library's collection, which would you choose? What do you see on your library's shelves?

Take our MAGAZINE SURVEY and tell us.

THIS WEEK: NC Bill of Rights Tour

Come by the library for a rare opportunity to view one of the original copies of the Bill of Rights.

North Carolina's copy of the Bill of Rights is one of 14 copies of the proposed amendments to the U.S. Constitution prepared by three federal clerks in 1789. A copy was drafted for the governor of each of the existing 13 states to peruse as the adoption of the 12 amendments to the Constitution was debated; the other copy was for the federal government. The document was stolen during the Civil War and remained lost to the state for 140 years, but is now on a statewide tour of 7 cities.

Free public viewings will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8; 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9; and 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday, Nov. 10

    Proposed Withdrawal of Bound Journals

    Dear campus community,

As you well know, college libraries have experienced radical change beginning early in the second half of the twentieth century. Many of you will recall Ramsey Library’s card catalog from the early 1980s, a periodical collection which topped out at about 1,800 titles, and when the only computer in the library was a word-processor in the administrative office. I can. In addition to being more than twice as big and considerably more attractive, today’s Ramsey Library offers services and collections exceeding what would have been found in a small research library of the 1980s: access to full text articles from over 35,000 journals, magazines, and newspapers worldwide; a building brimming with more than 110 computers including nearly 30 laptops available free for student use; full access to library electronic library resources and the Web from fixed workstations or wireless; electronic course reserve; easy and direct remote access to all electronic products; and a virtual on-line publishing house making rich primary sources and images available from Ramsey’s growing Special Collections. And we continue to evolve to better meet the information needs of the UNC Asheville learning community.

New Catalog Feature: Browse by Class

Like the serendipity of browsing the library shelves? Now you can explore our materials online from macro- to micro-level subject divisions by clicking the "Browse" tab in the library catalog. With book cover images and links to reviews and Search Inside the Book, it's almost as good as being here.

    Try it out here.

    Proposed VHS Withdrawals

In order to make room for our growing collection of DVD films, we have flagged 225 VHS films as candidates for withdrawal. These films meet one of the following criteria:

    a) we have them on DVD;
    b) we are in the process of replacing them on DVD; or
    c) they don't fit our collection/support the curriculum

Review the list. Send any comments to sinclair(at)unca.edu.

What's the story behind the art in the library? What's the best way to find an article? Who was D. Hiden? What time does this place close?

Spend those few minutes before class finding out.

Proposed Microfilm Withdrawals and Retention Changes

In light of our rapidly growing online holdings and ever-present budgetary and space concerns, the library has compiled a list of redundant microfilm titles for withdrawal, binding or limited retention. These titles have been carefully evaluated to ensure that we will not lose coverage by ending our microform subscription. In every case, the library has either a JSTOR, SCIENCEDIRECT, PROJECT MUSE, LION, or publisher subscription for the backfiles, or the subject bibliographer has approved cancellation based on either a decision to switch to binding or on the availability of the title in one or more of our aggregator services such as ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER or INFOTRAC.

The microfilm list is available for review. Members of the campus community may report any concerns to the appropriate subject bibliographer.
