Political changes of enormous consequence have taken place in Russia since 1985. Since this is a complex, confusing, and fascinating period of history, finding primary and secondary sources of information is challenging. This guide focuses on materials available in Ramsey Library, and does not attempt to list all resources. |
Locating Books
Search the WNCLN library catalog to find books and audiovisual materials held by the libraries of UNCA, Appalachian State University, and Western Carolina University. There are two ways to find books and media by subject: Subject searches and Words searches.
Subject Searches
There are numerous subject headings in the library catalog under which information on Russia can be found. The lists here are not meant to be exhaustive, but to suggest starting points. For general works on the Russian Federation, the Commonwealth of Independent States, or the former Soviet Union use the following subject headings:
Russia (Federation)
Commonwealth of Independent States
Former Soviet Republics
Soviet Union
Each of these subject headings may be broken down into subheadings. For example:
| Russia (Federation)--Economic Conditions Russia (Federation)--Economic Conditions--1991- Russia (Federation)--Foreign Relations Russia (Federation)--Foreign Relations--United States Russia (Federation)--Politics and Government Russia (Federation)--Politics and Government--1991- |
Russia (Federation)--Post Communism Russia (Federation)--Post Communism--Public Opinion Russia (Federation)--Social Conditions Russia (Federation)--Social Conditions--Statistics |
Other related subject searches include:
| Communism--Soviet Union Detente Europe--Military policy Glasnost Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles North Atlantic Treaty Organization Nuclear Arms control--Soviet Union Peaceful Change (International Relations) |
Perestroika Reykjavik Treaties United States--Foreign Relations--Russia Visits of State--Soviet Union Warsaw Treaty Organization Washington Summit, December 1987 World Politics--1989- |
Note that when dates are included in a subheading, the date used will often
represent the earliest date covered by the book. So "1989- "
indicates that a book covers the subject from 1989 on.
The subheading bibliography may be used with any subject heading. Look for books with substantial bibliographies to lead you to more resources. For other subject headings, consult Library of Congress Subject Headings, a four-volume thesaurus of headings used by most libraries.
For information on specific individuals, search for their names by subject or keyword. Note that some public figures, such as Gorbachev and Yeltsin were both the authors and subjects of books, so it might be useful to search by both author and subject. Personal names often include dates:
Gorbachev, Mikhail Sergeevich, 1931-
Yeltsin, Boris Nikolayevich, 1931-
Words Searches
Use words searches to find books when you don't know the precise subject headings that describe your topic. Words searches retrieve records containing specified keywords in the title, subject, or notes fields. The library catalog supports truncation and the use of AND, OR, and parentheses (Searches with parentheses are sometimes called "nested Boolean searches"). It is optional to type AND between search words; the AND is implied. A search may be more understandable if you do include AND when using parentheses to group terms.
Search examples:
| (gorbachev or yeltsin) foreign policy |
Use parentheses if both OR and AND are used in the same search |
| (russia* or soviet) and (bibliograph* foreign policy) |
The "*" searches for any ending on a word |
