Books, journals, and other library materials located at UNCA, WCU and ASU are accessible through the ABC Express courier service.

Electronic Resources

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition. Provides full text access to over 450 journals covering many medical disciplines. (NC Live)

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health). Indexing for over 1,200 nursing and health sciences journals. (NC Live)

PubMed (MEDLINE). Index to the scholarly literature of medicine. (National Library of Medicine)

Academic Search Premier. Another general index to many different topics. (NC Live)

Expanded Academic ASAP. A general index that covers a wide variety of subjects and disciplines. (NC Live)

ScienceDirect. Over 800 full-text journals in 16 fields of the sciences and social sciences with more than 200 journals from various medical disciplines. (Elsevier)

LexisNexis Academic Universe. Full-text news and wire services, including medical news.

Finding Journals

Journal Holdings: Check the library catalog to identify journal titles held at UNCA, ASU, and WCU. The catalog also provides access to electronic journals.

Journal Locations: Print journals in Ramsey Library are located on the main floor. Current issues are arranged by call number. Back issues are either bound and shelved by call number, or retained in micro format and shelved by title in the Microforms Area.

Reference Books

Health reference books are shelved in the Reference "R" section. These resources include dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, manuals, a guides. Below are a few examples.

American Medical Association Complete Medical Encyclopedia.   Ref RC 81 .A2 A497 2003.

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary.  Ref R 121 .D73 29th ed. 2000.

Gray's Anatomy.  Ref QM 23.2 .G73 1995.

General Circulating Books

Circulating medical and health books are shelved on the lower floor in the General "R" and "Q" sections. A general subject search for this topic is "Men -- health and hygiene."  To locate specific titles in the collection search the library catalog by subject, keywords, or title.

Often books are published with accompanying CD computer disks. These disks may remain with the book or they may be shelved separately in the library's Media Center. Look at the library catalog record to see if an accompanying CD is located in the Media Center.

Web Resources

There are many Internet sites that provide medical information. The quality and credibility of these sites vary, so carefully evaluate what you find.

AAFP Men's Health - Men's health information from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

MedlinePlus Men's Health Issues - Links to authoritative web sites identified by the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

New York Online Access to Health - Links to basic and specific topics on men's health.

Mayo Clinic - Men's Health Center - Provides access to the experience and knowledge of the more than 2,000 physicians and scientists of Mayo Clinic.

New York Times Men's Health Center - A compilation of articles on specific men's health concerns
