Internet Resources for Medieval Studies

The following sites represent some of many starting points for research on medieval topics. A full list of medieval materials available on-line can not possibly be assembled here, but it is hoped that this brief and idiosyncratic list will start you on the road to many productive hours of browsing the Web.

Search Engines

A search engine is a tool to help navigate the Web. To use the Web effectively and efficiently you will need to use one of these search engines. Searches will need to be formulated as concisely as possible.

AltaVista

Lycos (Indexes many more documents than the others, but many are often not applicable)

Yahoo (Best for specialized Web sites, but it will also plug you into other more specialized search engines)

Search Argos -  Limited area search engine for Ancient and Medieval Studies

Discussion Lists

There are several discussion lists where you may conduct serious discussion on topics related to medieval history. These are not "chat-rooms". The participants generally expect you to participate in substantive discussion. One discussion list name follows:

Mediev-L - listproc@ukans.edu

Other, more specialized lists of interest to medievalists may be searched using various databases. A good one to begin with is Liszt. Others may be accessed from the Research Guide, Internet Discussion Lists.

If you are interested in subscribing to any of these lists you may want to "observe" the discussion before committing to engage in discussion.

ORB--Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies
