Index Sites

Index sites, which gather a large number of links on a particular subject, are often the best places to begin an exploration of the Web.

Foreign Language Resources on the Web - University of California, Berkeley. Includes only "quality links" to foreign language resources

GlobeGate Project - Organization created to organize Internet resources for students and teachers of foreign languages. Indexes several thousand foreign-language Web pages.

Language Links - Good gateway site with teaching resources. Includes all the languages we teach and study at UNCA.

The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies - Resources relating to European authors and works. Georgetown University.

Voice of the Shuttle - Great starting place for Web research in languages or literatures.

Kiosko Mundo Latino - El indice más completo de los medios en español

LexisNexis Academic. UNCA users only. Select Foreign Language News from the menu, then select Dutch, French, German, Italian, or Spanish from the menu. A good opportunity to read current news stories in another language.

The On-line Books Page Foreign Languages Archive - John Mark Ockerbloom, Carnegie Mellon University. Part of the Universal Library Project at Carnegie Mellon.

The Human Languages Page - Comprehensive catalog of about 1,900 reviewed links to language resources. Pick a language, such as Spanish to get started. Includes online dictionaries and foreign language pages.

Electronic Text Collections in Western European Literature - University of Virginia site.

Communication Connections - Compiled for the Foreign Language Department at Gloucester High School  in Gloucester, Virginia. A great resource for any beginning student. Pick your language and go.

Dictionaries

Language Dictionaries and Translators - Described as "Babal-icious" by a reviewer, this page lists resources for a large number of languages. Translators are best enjoyed as an amusement, since the computer-produced results are usually a hoot.

Mama's Learn to Speak Italian - The not-so-serious Ragú Web site has a few recorded phrases to listen to. Bonus: For some fun, check out Go Mama Go!. You'll need the Click-Toons plug-in to play "the next step in interactive cheese," a Nintendo-like game.

Progetto Pico / Pico Project - Pico della Mirandola's Discourse on the Dignity of Man. The text is from the first printed edition (Bologna, 1846), of which there are no extant manuscripts.

I Classici della Letteratura Italiana - edizioni critiche - Works and biographies of major writers.

Risorse Web Italiane - Italian Web Resources - General index to Italian Web sites on just about any topic, not just sites about Italy. For example, you can visit  BEE GEES ITALIA - a tribute to "I leggendari Bee Gees." A site to be explored.

Arte e cultura - part of  Dr.DAD(a) DADAnet - CANALI, or Dr. Dada. Many quality sites in the Italian language, but not necessarily about Italian subjects, such as GP Studio - Museo Virtuale di Pablo Picasso, a virtual gallery of Picasso's works in 2-D or 3-D.

Italy-Italia: America-USA: Where 2 Worlds Meet - General information. See Italian Literature -  Summarizes, in English, the history of Italian literature.

Rome Reborn: The Vatican Library & Renaissance Culture - Library of Congress exhibition.

Musei Vaticani - Site maintained by the Christus Rex organization includes a multitude of images from the Vatican Museum.

The Holy See (La Santa Sede) - Official site of Vatican City. The site is available in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Opera Web - "The Starting Point for the Opera World." Italian or English versions.

ClassicalNet - Look up information on works or composers. While this is a general site, there are a number of articles about Italian composers.

AATSP: American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese - Has a Video Resource Library, sponsors workshops and an annual meeting.

ACTFL: American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages - 7,000 member national organization that promotes foreign language instruction at all educational levels. Features a directory of resources, Standards for FL Learning in the 21st Century, and some downloadable reports on teaching issues.

Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) - Launched in 1993, the Center supports programs of research, training, development, and dissemination of information related to second language teaching, learning and assessment. One of nine National Language Resource Centers designated to improve the nation's capacity to teach and learn foreign languages effectively. University of Minnesota.

Center for Applied Linguistics - Organization that strives to improve the teaching of English as a second language and foreign language instruction at all levels of the educational system.

ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics - Publishes digests, short bibliographies, and a newsletter for foreign language teachers.

FLTeach - Foreign Language Teaching Forum. A place where teachers can get information, share ideas, teaching materials, and class activities
