Periodicals
Periodical Indexes
Periodical indexes are essential for locating articles on specific
subjects. Ramsey Library provides access to numerous electronic indexes. Off-campus access is
available for many of the library's periodical indexes.
Identifying journal citations
EBSCOhost
The EBSCOhost database vendor provides access to education literature through two of its
major databases, Academic Search Premier and ERIC.
Academic Search Premier is a multi-disciplinary database that offers full-text for nearly 2,050 scholarly journals. Covering
virtually every area of academic study, Academic Search Premier offers information dating as far back as 1985. This database
is updated daily.
The ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) database is a federally funded national information system
designed to provide access to more than one million abstracts of documents and journal articles on education research and
practice. ERIC ceased publishing in January 2004, but EBSCOhost provides archival coverage for ERIC document and
educational journal citations from 1966 through January 2004.
Accessing EBSCOhost from the Ramsey Library
Home page
Click in the “Quick Links” drop down menu on the library home page.
Select EBSCOhost.
Searching EBSCOhost:
On the EBSCOhost Database Selection screen, select Academic Search Premier
and scroll down to select ERIC.
Press Continue” to search both databases simultaneously.
Search Strategy –
- Begin a basic search by entering words or terms on a topic. Separate multiple terms with
Boolean operators such as AND, OR, NOT. For a more precise search, click “Advanced Search” on the top bar. The “Advanced Search”
screen allows you to combine terms, search in specific fields, and offers several limiting options (e.g.. limits by publication
type, language, journal or document).
- To locate refereed or scholarly journal articles in Academic Search Premier, simply
select “Scholarly Journals” under limit options. To locate research articles in
ERIC, set limits to “journal article” and
publication type to “reports – research/technical or reports – feasibility.” To fully appreciate the richness of these
databases and to search them more efficiently, click Database Help and/or Searching Tips for detailed instructions.
- Avoid using general single search terms that retrieve many records, such as education, school, teaching, etc…
Use the online or printed thesaurus to identify and define terms or concepts.
ERIC Online Thesaurus – ERIC (EBSCOhost) and the Educators’ Reference Desk both provide links to the ERIC
Thesaurus.
Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (printed version) – shelved at Ref Desk AI .E52
- ERIC indexes journal articles and microfiche documents. The accession number indicates EJ for journal articles
or ED for documents on microfiche. ERIC documents are filed by ED number in the microforms room. Search
the library catalog to identify and locate journal holdings.
Off-campus access
EBSCOhost is available simply by selecting the databases from the library Web site and then
entering your UNCA ID as a password. For UNCA students, faculty, and
staff, your ID number is normally your social security number plus an
extra digit ("1" or "2"); no dashes or spaces. See instructions on the “Off-campus access”
page or call the research support desk (251-6111).
Other useful indexes
The library has a subject listing of additional education-related databases and guides. The following are especially
appropriate for education topics.
The Educators’ Reference Desk: ERIC (1966-
Jan.2004). http://www.eduref.org/Eric/
This Web site is the federal government portal to education information and the ERIC database.
Access to ERIC through the Educator’s Reference Desk is free on the Web and available
off-campus at any location with Internet access. The Educators’ Reference Desk also includes lesson plans and links to Web resources by subject. However, links to full-text
articles are not available when ERIC is searched from this portal.
InfoTrac Academic OneFile. Indexes abstracts and full-text articles from
core journals in many disciplines, including education.
PsycINFO
(1887+). Indexes psychological literature and articles related to
education topics.
Accessing the Education Subject List from the Ramsey Library
Home Page:
Select “Electronic Resources” on the library home page.
Select “Online Indexes & Databases” by Subject.
Select “Education.”
Obtaining journals
Many periodical databases will provide links to full-text online articles. However, if links to full-text are not provided in a
database, search the library catalog under Periodical Title to see if Ramsey Library owns a journal or has access to it
electronically. Journals available only at ASU or WCU may be requested through
ABC Express. Article copies from
journals not available at UNCA, ASU, or WCU may be requested through Interlibrary
Loan. Detailed information is
available at the Research Support Desk (251-6111).
Electronic Journals
The BEST way to identify online journals is to perform a Periodical
Title Search in the library catalog. A catalog search will provide links
to online titles along with full electronic holdings. Below are some
examples of electronic journals available in Ramsey
Library.
