Using Indexes to Locate Articles
Since articles are not included in the library catalog, indexes are
essential to locating articles on specific subjects. Ramsey Library
provides access to indexes focusing on different subject areas. For a
complete list of indexes, see Ramsey
Library Electronic Resources By Title or By
Subject
Online & CD-ROM indexes to journal titles/articles related to
Chemistry:
ACS
Web Editions. (American Chemical Society; full text; dates vary)
Journals that require a password are not part of this subscription. The
Web editions of 18 ACS journals that WCU, ASU and UNCA subscribe in print
are available electronically.
ScienceDirect.
Over 100 full-text chemistry
journals (general, analytical, inorganic, organic, physical and
theoretical, and spectroscopy). Elsevier Science
Citation Index Expanded, 1980-present. Available online through
Web of Knowledge. ISI.
SciFinder Scholar. Provides access to several Chemical Abstract
Service databases, including Chemical Abstracts, Registry,
CASREACT, CHEMLIST, and CHEMCAT. Users may search
more than 19 million citations to the chemistry literature by topic,
author, CAS Registry Numbers, patent number and CAS abstract number. More
than 22 million chemical substances may be searched by chemical name,
chemical structure, CAS Registry Numbers, and formula. Users can also do
substructure searching. (source: vendor website.) SciFinder Scholar is
installed on two workstations near the Research & Technology Desk and is available
on computers in the Chemistry Department. Ask at the Research Services Desk
for more information. CAS
InfoTrac Academic OneFile. Excellent general index to the journal
literature of the sciences. Includes the full text or links to the full
text of many articles. Recently enhanced with links to titles covered in
ScienceDirect, ACS Web Editions, and Ingenta.
Gale
Biological
Abstracts (via Web of Knowledge). (1969+) Index to about 6,000
journals in the life sciences, including agriculture, biology,
biochemistry, ecology, immunology, neuroscience, biomedicine, and
veterinary science.
Online References
International Critical Tables of Numeric Data, Physics, Chemistry and
Technology, 7 volumes and index (first electronic edition).
Originally
published for the National Research Council, ICT offers data on physical,
thermodynamic, mechanical, and other key properties. Many tables are
interactive. The full text of the original print version is available in
PDF format. Information has been indexed to allow fielded searches
(example: find all alcohols with a boiling point between 50-100 Celsius).
Results can be manipulated in spreadsheet-like tables allowing you to sort
and select only the information you need.
knovel Critical Tables
Features
tables of properties for commonly used chemical compounds in the physical
properties tables. Information has been indexed to allow fielded searches
(example: find all alcohols with a boiling point between 50-100 Celsius).
Results can be manipulated in spreadsheet-like tables, allowing you to
sort and select only the information you need.
PubChem Free access to information about small molecules and links to data
used to study genes, cells, and biochemical pathways. Search three linked
databases, PubChem Substance, PubChem Compound, and PubChem BioAssay, and
link to citations in PubMed.
Thermochemistry of the Chemical Substances
Revision
of the table of values for the heats of formation in the thermochemistry
section in International Critical Tables. It includes 5,840 values of
heats of formation and 350 values of heats of transition, fusion,
vaporization, and reaction. All entries in the index are hyperlinked to
their page numbers.
Smithsonian Physical Tables (ninth revised edition) Comprising
901 tables concentrating on a broad scope of common physical and chemical
data. All entries in the index are hyperlinked to their page numbers.

Indispensable Print Resources
Look for chemistry books in the general stacks and the reference stacks
in the QD section of the library. Recent
encyclopedias of great reference
value are:
Van Nostrand's Encyclopedia of Chemistry. 5th ed.
2005. Ref QD4 .V36 2005
Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. 5th ed. 2004- Ref TP9
.K54 2004
Encyclopedia of Inorganic Chemistry. Ref QD148 .E53 1994
Chemistry Books
Chemistry books are shelved in the QD section of the
library. Books on chemical technology can be found in the TP section.
Both the QD and TP classes are shelved on the lower level of Ramsey Library.
