Using Indexes to Locate Articles

Since articles are not included in the library catalog, indexes are essential to locating articles on specific subjects. Ramsey Library provides access to indexes focusing on different subject areas. For a complete list of indexes, see Ramsey Library Electronic Resources By Title  or  By Subject

CD-ROM and online indexes to journal titles/articles related to Biology:
  • Agricola includes 2.9 million records from 1970 to the present and is compiled by the National Agricultural Library of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Agricola provides comprehensive coverage of worldwide literature on agriculture and related subjects including animal studies, botany, chemistry, forestry, natural history, wildlife and more. Agricola contains citations from journal articles, monographs, theses and more.

  • BioMed Central provides open access to primary research articles in biology and medicine. Many of these articles can also be accessed through PubMed (see below).

  • Biological Abstracts (via ISI Web of Knowledge) indexes some 6,000 journals in the life sciences, including agriculture, biology, ecology, immunology, neuroscience, biomedicine, and veterinary science. Coverage is 1969 to the present.

  • Connect to Biological Abstracts (click the Biological Abstracts tab)

  • Dissertation Abstracts includes dissertations accepted at accredited U.S. institutions since 1861 covering the full range of academic subjects.

  • InfoTrac Expanded Academic ASAP is a general periodical index that indexes a number of biology-related journals such as American Biology Teacher, American Journal of Botany, American Zoologist, Behaviour, The Botanical Review, Ecology, Evolution, Genetics, Journal of Bacteriology, Journal of Cell Biology, Journal of Mammalogy, Natural History, Nature, Science News, Wildlife Conservation and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S. Coverage of this database is 1980 to the present.

  • PsycINFO covers a broad range of topics in psychology as well as related areas of medicine, sociology, biology and education from 1985 to the present.
  • Connect to PsycINFO   NC LIVE

  • PubMed (MEDLINE) from the National Library of Medicine is the premier online database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the pre-clinical sciences.  MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 4,000 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 other countries. The file contains over 11 million citations dating back to the mid-1960's. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts

  • ScienceDirect provides access to over 800 full-text journals in 16 fields of the sciences and social sciences.

Comprehensive or index sites

New! Science.gov - Gateway to science and technology information provided by U.S. government agencies, including research and development results.

WWW Virtual Library - Provides links to virtual libraries of the sciences, organized by subject area. Search by keyword.

Biology Links - From the Harvard Dept. of Molecular and Cellular Biology; provides a primary virtual library for biology.

Internet Resource Guide for Zoology - The Mother Lode. A must visit site, maintained by Biosis, publisher of Biological Abstracts and Zoological Record. Easy to search by animal category.

Biological Resources Division - USGS - Links to many sites and data resources of interest to biologists, such as SAMAB's Southern Appalachian Home Page, or Amphibian Research and The North American Reporting Center for Amphibian Malformations

Martindale's 'The Reference Desk' - Central source for medicine and biotechnology information.

INFOMINE - Comprehensive site offers extensive annotations, full indexing and Boolean searching in the Biological, Agricultural, and Medical Sciences. Developed and supported by the Library of the University of California, Riverside.

CSU BIOWEB - California State U. Biological Sciences Web server that consolidates existing WWW biological science teaching and research resources.

The Natural History Museum  - London. An interesting site with pages to explore, such as the Department of Zoology home page.

Parasitology

David Gibson's Parasitological URLs - an Index site with many links.

CDC Home Travel Information Page - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta maintains this site.

The World of Parasites - Click on the world map to see what parasites are found in a geographic region.
    Incidence - How many people have parasites? Click on the diagram for more 
    information.

NMNH Entomology Database Library - Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. A work in progress containing a wealth of information on curated specimens, history, organization, literature, etc. in a searchable categories.
