Library Research 101

Library Services

There is a great deal of information about library services in Chapter 1. You should read this Chapter for your own benefit. Pay particular attention to the following:

Reserves

Many of your instructors will put items on reserve. To check out reserve materials you must know the call number of the item before requesting it at the Circulation Desk. To get the call number, go to the WNCLN library catalog on the Web. Select by Instructor or by Course next to "Search Course Reserves." Follow the on-screen instructions until you find the catalog record for the title you want. The location, call number, and status will be displayed in the catalog record. We will look at an example in class.

Another method: If you are in the library and all the PCs are in use, go to any library catalog terminal ("dumb" terminals have amber screens) in the Reference area. From the main menu (sometimes called the HidenSeek Gateway menu) select Reserves. Search by Professor or Course number. Get the call number. Go to the Circulation desk and ask for the item by call number. Reserves may be checked out for 2 hours, overnight, or 2 days, depending on the wishes of the instructor.

Media Center Services

Audiovisual items are housed in the Media Center. Check out audiocassettes, music CD's, diskettes or CD-ROM's that accompany books, and multimedia reserves (usually videos or CD-ROMs) at the Media Center desk.

ABC Express

The ABC Express is a "document delivery service" for the Western North Carolina Network (WNCLN). The ABC Express van runs between Asheville (UNCA), Boone (ASU), and Cullowhee (WCU) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You may request ABC Express delivery of books directly from the library catalog record for the item you want to check out. To request a periodical volume or issue, you must fill out a pink ABC Express Request card at the Research Support Desk. Your requests will be delivered on the next van. For detailed information on ABC Express, visit the ABC Express Web page or ask at the Research Support Desk. Monthly ABC Express calendars are available at the Circulation desk.

Interlibrary Loan

You may request Interlibrary loan of books and journal articles not held within the WNCLN. More information about Interlibrary Loan.

Online databases and indexes

Many electronic databases and indexes to periodicals are available from the Ramsey Library home page. These invaluable research tools include InfoTrac, FirstSearch, CARL, PsycINFO, ERIC, Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, and many others. You will learn how to search online indexes later in this course. To access these resources, go to the Ramsey Library home page on the Web at http://bullpup.lib.unca.edu/library/ and click on the link to Electronic Resources.
