This three-hour Interdisciplinary
Studies First Year Experience (FYE) course also satisfies the general education
requirement of Library Research at UNCA. Team-taught
fall semesters by two librarians, this innovative course focuses on the arts and
architecture of the community as a vehicle for learning basic information retrieval
skills. The class visits sites in and around
Asheville including an early American Indian archeological dig, Asheville Public Library
historical collections, historic downtown Asheville, Asheville Art Museum, Grove Park Inn
and Biltmore Estate.
Projects and assignments are based on
site visits and use of electronic and other library resources and emphasize the processes
of description, interpretation, biography and critical analysis.
Goals and objectives include providing
the beginning student with a successful transition into the social and academic life of
the university and the Asheville community through a series of interactive cultural
experiences; providing students with a conceptual framework for effectively and
efficiently accessing information; encouraging critical and analytical skills; promoting
good writing skills through a series of pragmatic exercises and the evaluation of selected
essays; and including the six core components of the First Year Experience.
This course is evaluated by the class,
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Library Director, and FYE program director.
