About Ramsey
LibraryPeriodicalsCurrent Periodicals Current PeriodicalsRecent issues of all journals and magazines are found here. Shelved by call numberRansey Library shelves periodicals by call number, so that the titles relating to a subject area are together for easy browsing. Therefore, you must know the call number to find a specific title. How to find the call numberLook up the call number of the journal or magazine you want to find in the online catalog or in the printed Periodicals Holdings List. Copies of the Periodicals Holdings List can usually be found in this area. General overview by subjectConsult the Periodicals Subject Guide at the Research Support Desk to see a list of journals, magazines, and newspapers by broad subject category. Bound PeriodicalsPast issues or "backfiles" of periodicals that are preserved as bound volumes are found in this area. Bound volumes are shelved by call number, just as the current periodicals. The first part of the call number, the Library of Congress subject classifica tion, groups the bound volumes by subject, so that you will find all the bound history journals together, all the biology journals together, and so on. If the past issues you need are not bound, but on microfilm or microfiche, they will be located in the Microforms area. A copier is located near the bound periodicals area. The copier accepts coins or copycards. Copycard copies are six cents each; coin-paid copies are ten cents each. You can purchase a copycard or add value to an existing card from the dispenser near the copy machine. Microfilm and MicroficheMicroforms are housed behind the Circulation Desk and across from the Reference Collection. Since it is nearly impossible to browse microforms, they are shelved alphabetically by journal or magazine title. Microfilm reels and microfiche are intershelved . The library always keeps current issues until the microform arrives to replace them. Microfilm and microfiche reader-printers are located in the same area. Prints are ten cents per copy. Some of the machines accept nickels only, but there is a change machine nearby. NewspapersThe library subscribes to about 23 newspapers. Current issues are on the rack, and approximately 2-3 months of backfiles are on nearby shelves. Some of the major newspapers are indexed in InfoTrac and are kept permanently in microfilm:
