Ramsey Library Lower Floor

What's downstairs?

General Collection Q - Z

The lower floor houses General Collection (books that may be checked out) with Library of Congress call numbers beginning with letters Q through Z. This part of the collection includes mathematics, pure and applied sciences, technology and library science.

Curriculum materials and juvenile literature

Curriculum materials currently adopted by the state of North Carolina are available here. These textbooks, teacher guides, workbooks, and kits circulate for a three-week loan period, the same as books in the general collection. The collection is a useful resource for student teachers, education students, self-instruction, and home-schoolers.

Juvenile literature books and materials are selected on the basis of merit to provide good examples of children's literature for education students, parents, library science students. They are also here for the enjoyment of children (of all ages) and may be checked out by anyone with a valid UNCA ID card. There are some very large picture books that are excellent for reading aloud.

For more information about the Curriculum collection, please call Anita White-Carter at 251-6434, or send email to whitecarter@unca.edu.

Group and Private Studies

Private Studies are assigned to faculty or students based on need. Applications are available at the Circulation Desk. These studies are locked for security, but any library materials kept in private studies must be checked out. Yes, we do check.

Group studies may be used by anyone, but individuals should be prepared to yield to groups of 2 or more, since there is a limited number of these rooms. Each study has a chalkboard, a clock, and electrical outlets for your laptop or other (non-noisy) equipment.

Access for Disabled Users

There is a ramp for wheelchair access to the back entrance, convenient to designated handicapped parking spaces behind the library. Larger private studies with room for a wheelchair to turn around are also available on the lower floor of the library. The library also has equipment that enlarges text on a computer display for the visually impaired. Please inquire about permission to use the rear entrance or a private study at the Circulation Desk (251-6336) or call Lynne Olin at 251-6729.
