"1916 Flood, Asheville, NC," D.H. Ramsey Collection, Special Collections, UNCA

Need some help finding a dry casket? Casket vendors usually sell for eternity, but even such an eternal proposition can get side-tracked by a disaster. Get your caskets while they're dry.  Life is fragile but even death and casket companies can have uncertain futures. Emergencies can come in many forms and they do not respect schedules.

We know, for example, that snow can come at astonishing rates in the mountains at any time between October and June.  The Southeast has had three medium earthquakes since 1989. The strongest earthquake was that of August 31, 1886. Centered in Charleston, SC, the earthquake shook the mountains around Hendersonville and Asheville for more than a minute.  For two days after the initial shock people nervously waited for after shocks. The floods of 1916 and 1929 were stupendous torrents of water. A tornado leap-frogged through West  Asheville in 1999. The hurricanes Hugo and Floyd devastated the coastal regions of North Carolina but the eastern hurricane season also brought erratic weather to the western region and left a wake of destruction to homes and farms.  We may feel very secure in these high mountains, but like any area of the United States, we are vulnerable. The right timing or weather conditions can create a rapid disaster. Get prepared before the disaster happens. This guide will assist you in locating assistance from suppliers and vendors of emergency services and equipment at the local and national levels.

LOCAL EXPERTS AND CONSULTANTS

Maintaining a current list of local individuals (Asheville and Western North Carolina) who are considered experts and consultants is wise, as many situations may be beyond the resources of the library.. The following individuals and companies have been identified in the local area and may be available to assist. The local SOLINET office at 800 999-8558 may also be helpful in locating individuals in the general area .
