| Comments: | This is not so much a book about Southern cookery as it is about Southern history and culture as told through its eclectic foodways and greasy spoons. Arranged alphabetically by state, readers can dip into a state and town and discover all sorts of interesting morsels of food miscellanea -- from the unpalatable (racial discrimination at Ollie's Barbecue in Birmingham) to the sublime (the marriage of hushpuppies and pork shoulders in Lexington, North Carolina). Edge is currently director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, an affiliated institute of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. |
